art fair date night.

after a busy couple of weeks, colby and i were able to have a night out during my favorite weekend of the year to attend [a very small portion of] his 10 year high school reunion, and stroll through the plaza art fair. it was beautiful weather, as it always seems to be, accompanied by a handsome date, and delicious fine-dining-turned-street-vendor food & yummy cocktails.

october is going to be here really, really soon, and it's only going to get busier. oh, and i just got the BEST NEWS EVER today: IKEA is coming to Kansas City in 2014! (i've never actually been.. but i already know i love it.)

happy fall!

picnic with my owen.

last weekend, i had a sick boy on my hands. since football season is officially here, home games mean daddy is gone. he has a very nice friend whose family has very good seats who has invited him to every home game the last couple of years.

at any rate, my "corn-ky" (cranky, as said by owen) little boy needed some fresh air and some sunshine to remedy his mood. since he'd been feeling pretty miserable, we had spent a lot of time watching movies the day before. it was enough to make ME cranky, too! beautiful weather had arrived, so we packed some lunches and headed to a close-by park to have ourselves a little picnic. just the two of us.

it was perfect. he perked up for the duration of our visit and played hard on the playground and sand volleyball courts. once we were home, he crashed pretty hard, then took a long afternoon nap.

loved my sunday afternoon picnic on a perfectly beautiful day with my sweet date. :)

my boy loves his "tars." these images are a true representation of owen in his element. we have cars on the floor, on the steps, in his bed, in MY bed, in his diaper bag, in my purse, at the kitchen table, in drawers, in my car, in colby's car, under couch cushions, in the bathtub, on our back porch.. and almost always.. in his hands. you get the picture. i'm waiting to unknowingly step onto one on our wooden steps and bite the dust.

in fact, just last weekend, i found myself admiring the arms and back of our couch which have seemingly permanent miniature tire tracks running along them. a smile parallel with the one that swept my face months ago when rummaging through my purse for lip gloss while out to dinner and discovering my first toy car that had found its way into there. it's just really so special to be the momma to this little boy.

love my car-lovin' little BOY. :)

Potty Training Bootcamp, Part 1

We attempted some form of potty training this holiday weekend. A little more hardcore than our occasional, "Oh, Owen, let's sit on the potty," then not returning for another day or two. There are so many methods out there - a couple of 3-days to success, among others. But each and every one of those insist your child must be ready, or it would be a lost battle. Since I'm not completely convinced that my little guy is quite there, I had no expectations going into the weekend. I just wanted to spend some time being consistent, and if nothing else, just planting a seed.

The first day was hard. We set a timer to head to the potty every 30 minutes. And somehow, miraculously, he managed to potty only in between the timers. We started in underpants - mostly for my own pleasure because LOOK HOW CUTE! But quickly moved on to just going naked. Not until almost 5PM that evening did we have a successful trip to the potty. You should have seen my celebration dance. Owen was amused, and received a small graham cracker strip that we had sitting on the sink for this very purpose. Then came bath time, and he stood up and asked to potty after he'd started in the tub. A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

Day two welcomed 4 successful potty trips, but had diaper interruptions with a trip to church, and a long nap to throw off our groove. Regardless, that was more success than we had one day one, so I consider it another step in the right direction.

I'm undecided how we will proceed with the chaos of the school year, but I think it was worth the time. He didn't fight going to the potty. He constantly reminded me that when "tahmer off, go potty" and was overall a great sport about the whole thing. (Let's be serious - kids love an excuse to run around nekked.) And he was completely delighted by my excitement when he would go potty, and therefore quite pleased with himself in those moments.

Wish us luck. Potty Training Bootcamp, Part 2, and quite possibly Part 3 and 4 will one day follow. Hopefully sooner than later, but I'm not getting my hopes up. ;-)
